Any allegation of sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking can be made to the Title IX Coordinator, who is responsible for overall compliance with Title IX regulations and procedures for the entire Northwest community.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. It reads:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; 34 C.F.R. Part 106. Sex discrimination includes sexual harassment (sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking).

Northwest Missouri State University has the responsibility to remedy Title IX reports and prevent recurrence. All incident reports and records are private.

All members of the Northwest community who believe that they have been the victim of sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, or stalking, or know someone who may have been the victim, are encouraged to bring the incident to the attention of the Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Title IX Coordinator. 

Impacted parties have the right to:

1. Report an incident to university police and pursue criminal action by calling 660.562.1254 or email police@vahnet.net
2. Report a Title IX incident to the university (use the red report button, or contact the Title IX Coordinator at 660.562.1873 or titleix@vahnet.net.
3. File a civil case.

Impacted parties may take advantage of support assistance without filing an incident report. Options and resources available on campus and in the local community will be provided by the Title IX Coordinator, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, or UPD. Security measures, counseling, and other forms of safety assistance are available. 

All Northwest Missouri State University faculty and staff are “responsible employees” who have an obligation to report incidents of Title IX sexual harassment to the Title IX Coordinator.

What is Bystander Intervention?

Bystander intervention identifies an approach for taking action when you see an unjust or risky situation. Bystander intervention is a part of our Northwest values. Make a difference! Stand-up for a situation that isn't right.

Intervening can include:

• Speaking out against hurtful, hate, and discriminatory statements or behaviors. 
• Preventing situations that could lead to a sexual assault or other harm.
• Supporting individuals when they feel pressured, uncomfortable, or victimized.
• Helping others respond to problematic situations.

Bystander Intervention action could include any one of the 3-Ds:

• DIRECT - directly address the situation or harm.
• DISTRACT - distract someone from the situation or harm.
• DELEGATE - delegate intervention to the situation or harm to someone else.

Demonstrating Bystander Intervention does NOT mean that you should risk your personal safety. Use the 3-D approach that is comfortable for you.

Someone who demonstrates Bystander Intervention also:

• Approaches everyone with concern and compassion.
• Avoids using violence as a means of intervention.
• Refrains from antagonizing or accusatory actions.
• Asks for help from others and knows when to call for assistance (EMTs, UPD, RAs, etc.).

How Does This Make A Difference?

IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE; sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking are real issues experienced by many college students, including your friends!  About 1 in 5 women and 1 in 15 men will survive sexual assault during their time at college.

PAY ATTENTION to the warning signs of violence or someone being taken advantage of. 

DON’T BRUSH IT OFF; if something or someone makes you uncomfortable, say or do something.

WATCH OUT FOR EACH OTHER; if you see someone who looks like they're in trouble, ask if they're ok.

SPEAK UP if you see something offensive or abusive. If you hear victim blaming or jokes that degrade other people, don't laugh. Say you don't think it's funny to hurt others. Encourage respect.

Your student’s safety is of the utmost concern for everyone at Northwest Missouri State University. Everyone is entitled to a safe living and learning environment. All allegations of a Title IX violation will be reviewed and addressed by the Northwest Title IX Coordinator within the framework of the Department of Education’s Title IX regulations.
